ミシン愛好家によるグループ、マシン・キルト・アート・アソシエイツのメンバーだった2009年、Show ＆ Tell で発表した作品です。

2009年夏、娘を連れて伊豆の下田水族館へ行きました。水族館には小さなペンギンがたくさん。ただ遠くを眺め、ボーッと立っているペンギンたち。

その顔をひとつひとつ覗き込もうとした瞬間、飼育員の方がエサを持ってきました。それを目にしたペンギンたち。

一瞬何が起こったのかわからないくらい、ものすごい勢いで走り出し、水槽へ飛び込みました。水槽の中が丸見えの位置にいた私は、まるでペンギンが飛んだ姿を見たような気がしたのです。

この作品は70cm×70cmと小さく、窮屈な水槽の中のようにも見えますが、見方によっては下のほうの大地に流れる川、丘の合間に広がる森、そして仲間と空を飛ぶペンギン・・・がイメージできるようにつくりました。

In the summer of 2009, I went to the Shimoda Aquarium of Izu with my daughter. There are many small penguins in the aquarium. The penguins are just standing and looking far away.

At the moment when I tried to look into the faces one by one, the keeper brought food. Penguins who saw it. For a moment, they started running at a tremendous speed and jumped into the aquarium so I couldn’t understand what had happened.

I was in a position where the aquarium was completely exposed, and I felt as if I saw the penguins flying.

This work is small at 70 cm x 70 cm, and it looks like a cramped aquarium, but depending on how you look at it, the river flowing through the land below, the forest spreading between the hills, and the penguins flying in the sky with friends…
